Who Will Speak When They Come For You?

Inspired by "First They Came"

Hello friends,

The title of this piece inspired by the First They Came poem by Martin Niemoller.*

I've been thinking a lot about what we are witnessing in the USA and the world (because how the world reacts to 47's shenanigans says a lot).

And I know a lot of people are feeling that we didn't want to be in the "I told you so" position but we are. And it's worse than many people could have imagined. The collusion with genocide. The erosion of rights. The erasure, deportation and murder of Black and Brown people (which, let's face it, never stopped happening).

The truth: 47 should never have been 45. And 45 should have been excluded from running again based on what he actually did, which for anyone else would have been treason. But yet here we are.

And the people who thought what he planned would only affect people of the global majority or only affect people who weren't citizens are finding out they are wrong. Because even citizenship is conditional now, as are the rights people thought were enshrined in law and practice.
