Hello, friends, 2026 has started much as 2025 ended. In fact, there’s so much to talk about that it’s hard to keep up. One of the recent events was the murder of Renee Good by an ICE agent. As I say in this episode, it should never have happened, but there are also other lessons and messages from the way it’s been handled in the media. In this short episode, you get my initial thoughts - I didn’t spend weeks on planning, but wrote and recorded what came to me. I’d love to hear your thoughts after you listen or read.

Let's start with the fact that nobody deserves to die like Renee Good did. This was just plain wrong.

But there are also bigger issues that have occurred to me and that I'm seeing Black activists comment on across social media.

Because the justified shock and outrage have been conspicuously absent from some folx when Black and Global Majority people were being seized and unalived, and when the same was happening to trans folx. Conditional empathy isn't empathy. And many of us are over the obvious message that our lives matter less to many people.

What happened to Renee Good has happened to many people racialised as Black, to people of the Global Majority, to trans folx. And it was happening long before state-sanctioned thugs started wearing masks to do their killing (remind you of anything? Hint: start with the letter K, then add two more).
